Cristiano Torezzan | Associate Professor

received a PHd degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Campinas (2009) and a degree in Mathematics from the University of the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil (1999). He is currently an associate professor in the School of Applied Sciences (FCA) at Univesity of Campinas (UNICAMP), in Limeira, Brazil.

In 2016, he received the UNICAMP Teacher Recognition Award and, in 2018, he was honored at the Limeira City Council with the title of Innovative University Professor. From 2013 and 2017 he coordinated the Professional Master's Degree in Applied and Computational Mathematics at IMECC-UNICAMP and from 2017 and 2021 he coordinated the Regional Administration of the UNICAMP Campuses of Limeira and Piracicaba (SAR). Since 2017, he has been part of the board of the Brazilian Society for Operational Research (SOBRAPO) and currently he serves as the 2nd vice president of this Society. He is also associated to the Brazilian Institute of Data Science (BI0S).

Research:

His research interests orbit around the intersection of two broad areas: data science and operations research. He as been working on problems involving optimization, machine learning, multicriteria decision and preference modeling. He has also worked in the field of information theory, particularly in geometric aspects involving lattices and spherical codes. In short, he is an applied mathematician excited to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects that can impact society.

Machine Learning (ML):

  • ML methods for tabular data

  • Interpretable models in ML

  • Applications: medicine, finance, industry.

Multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA):

  • Preference modeling using MCDA methods

  • Unsupervised (data-driven) approaches for MCDA

  • Missing data in decision analysis

  • Applications: sport sciences, finance, supplier selection, industry, and government decision aiding.

Optimization:

  • Matrix completion: methods and applications

  • Heuristics for global optimization

  • Linear and nonlinear programming

  • Applications: distance geometry, sports, logistics, industry.
